SCENES FROM MY LIFE:
Me:  I feel super uncomfortable in bars. There’s all these people, and they’re all drinking and laughing and talking with each other, andI feel really out of place and awkward.
Friend:  …You know, Sara, there’s a very simple solution to that.
Me:  *blank stare*  I don’t understand?

You can measure how creative I’m feeling by how many bears I’m drawing.  It’s an inverse relationship.
I kind of think this one looks like a giant ground sloth, but let’s not kid ourselves here.

“Jenny, name an animal!”
“What kind of animal?”
“Anything!  Anything in the world!  I want to practice painting.”
“Uh, okay… cat.”
Cat?
Really?
Cat?
I would have given you mongooses, Jenny!  I would have painted you dikdiks and capybaras and roly-polys and swans!  I would have painting you anything!
And you chose “cat.”
Well, okay.
I don’t know what I was expecting.

While I love my adopted cities, I often feel homesick for the people and places I left behind seven years ago.  I visit often, but not as often as I would sometimes like.
But my apartment is only two blocks away from Interstate 94—that long, beautiful route through Wisconsin.
Just two blocks (and six hours on the road)… and I’m home again.

I seriously have never been good at it.
I remember standing in line to leave the classroom in first grade, looking up at all of our artwork that was posted on the walls, and feeling crushed because my colors were less vibrant, less defined, less beautiful than everyone else’s.
In first grade.
That’s a lifetime of no confidence in a medium I know has the potential to be beautiful and freeing.
So, I’m practicing.  Expect lots of mediocre watercolor pages in the coming weeks.
I’m totally gonna get better at this.
